Best Mattress: Top Picks from All Our Reviews

Comfortable Mattress Cloud Floating Woman Home Refinery

Do you sleep well at night? According to research, more than 100 million Americans aren’t getting the amount of sleep needed to ensure proper health 3. Further research states mattress quality is the biggest cause of poor sleep for those complaining of chronic pain 2. Finding the best mattress for better sleep is not an easy task and requires great due diligence and fortitude. To make things easier, we’ve combed through all our mattress reviews to come up with a list of the best mattress in each category we’ve compared so far.

Sleep Science

Mattress quality has a direct impact on sleep quality and our health

Before we dive into our considerations of the inherent qualities found in the best mattress, let’s first take a moment to consider the importance of sleep. After all—to consider a mattress completely one must understand the many positive effects it may offer. In a 2015 sleep survey, the National Sleep Foundation found that the environmental factors played the largest role in sleep quality. Among these factors, mattress quality was the most important influence on sleep quality1. Second, to mattress quality, the temperature was the next leading environmental factor. This study also revealed that people that sleep well at night report having a 50% better overall state of health and quality of life 1. This suggests that mattresses have a direct influence over our health and wellbeing and that having the highest-quality mattress possible with the best possible temperature control will set us up for success. Simple right? As it turns out, finding the best mattress amidst the ocean of possible options can be quite a task.

Best Mattresses by Category

Memory foam, traditional, latex, you name it—we’ve reviewed it

We’ve reviewed quite a few mattresses and during the process, we’ve had the pleasure of experiencing some truly world-class products. We’ve also had the misfortune of spending a few nights trying to sleep on heaps of springs and heat that epitomize misery. Seriously. From our experience, we’ve realized that an individual’s sleeping preferences largely influence which mattress is best-suited for them. To help you on your search for the best mattress, we’ve organized all our mattress reviews by type of mattress and/or sleep preference. We then selected the best mattress from each category to help narrow your search. Below you’ll find our results.

The Green Tea by Zinus is Eco-Friendly, Comfortable, and Unbelievably Affordable.

Two-Sided Natural Latex Hybrid by IDLE Sleep

IDLE Sleep is a relative new-comer to the mattress industry but their two-sided luxury latex hybrid bears no marks of their youth. This mattress may be our favorite mattress out of all that we’ve had the chance to review. It features a flippable design with two layers of natural Talalay latex offering a firm comfort level on top and a medium comfort level on the bottom side. Beneath these layers of latex, there rests a layer of microcoils to help reduce motion transfer and promote airflow. All this is wrapped in an organic cotton cover that is incredibly soft. This material has been engineered to actually convert body heat into light which compliments the already breathable design. All things considered, the Amerisleep AS3 is one of the best mattresses around and our top pick for anyone that wants to ensure a cool night’s sleep.

About Our Choices

We aren’t Scientists but we’ve done our research

Our picks for best mattress aren’t to be considered Scientific in nature. We’ve researched each of these mattresses extensively and have considered the attributes we feel to be most relevant for most people. These mattresses have been chosen for their overall value rather than their ability to address any single need. For example, a $2500 memory foam mattress will likely be of higher overall quality than a $600 one but our consideration takes into account both the quality and the price. In other words, if most people can’t afford it we don’t consider it a great mattress.

Final Considerations

The mattresses listed here are those we feel best to represent the categories for which they were chosen as the best mattress. We’d like to make special note that when buying a new mattress one’s most immediate choice will be whether to buy a mattress online or to buy one in a local store. Many of the mattresses reviewed here are available in only one of the two. Most bed-in-a-box brands such as Nectar Sleep, Tomorrow Sleep, and Amerisleep only offer their products for sale online. This isn’t the case with every mattress but is a good general rule. For those buying in local stores; it’s now common to receive an in-home trial period during which you can return your mattress for a full refund. If your local mattress store doesn’t offer this—find another one!

iComfort Blue 100 Memory Foam Mattress by Serta

The Serta iComfort Blue 100 memory foam mattress features a soft contouring gel memory foam top, gel-infused memory foam sub-layers, and an edge-maintaining and roll-off stopping base layer. The Blue 100 offers a balanced comfort level, leaning towards the softer side, and is priced at the introductory level of the iComfort lineup. We found this mattress to be pretty incredible and are excited to tell you all about it.

The iComfort series by Serta offers a lineup of memory foam mattresses designed for comfort and priced for several different budget ranges. The iComfort Blue 100 Gentle firm is rated as a 4-5/10 firmness, features Serta’s TempActiv™ Gel Memory Foam and Ultimate Edge® foam base. The Blue 100 is the introductory model in the iComfort family and is priced in the $1,110 range. The main difference in this model compared to the more expensive ones is the lack of Serta’s Deep Reaction™ Memory Foam and Air Suspension™ Technology.

iComfort Blue 100 Layer Illustration
The iComfort Blue 100 features several layers of foam to provide a balanced sense of support and comfort.

The iComfort takes a balanced approach to provide comfort and back support. This mattress makes use of several different layers to provide a dynamic and adaptive contour support. Each layer is designed with a specific benefit in mind and, as a collective, they all work to provide a cool and comfortable night’s rest.

Layer One: ¾” TempActiv™ Gel Memory Foam

The first layer is Serta’s renowned TempActiv Gel Memory foam that’s designed to provide all the benefits of gel memory foam and better temperature control. Keeping things cool is always an important concern when it comes to memory foam mattresses. The iComfort passes with flying colors; largely because of this ¾” thick layer.

Layer Two: 2” EverCool® Fuze™ Memory Foam

The second layer down is a 2” thick layer gel-infused memory foam that is designed by Serta with breathability in mind. This layer is very similar to the top layer but created in such a way that helps offer better pricing for this introductory iComfort model.

Layer Three: Serta Balanced Support Foam

The third layer is a fairly generic foam, again to help reduce cost on the introductory model, that is included to help balance out the plushness of the memory foam. While memory foam offers often-superior contouring it can easily feel too soft without added support. This 1″ thick layer rests just below the memory foam to help provide that “just right” balance between comfort and support.

Layer Four: 6″ Ultimate Edge Foam

This bottom-most layer offers ample support for the entirety of the mattress and helps support optimal weight distribution. Serta’s Ultimate Edge system is designed to avoid edge-sagging and prevent rolloff when one gets too close to the edge. Base layers are often where manufacturers choose to “cheap out” and save cost. The iComfort memory foam mattresses are no such cheapskates.

The iComfort mattress is available in both memory foam and hybrid memory foam designs. Our review here is only of the memory foam model and not meant to describe the hybrid. With that in mind, the iComfort memory foam mattress is available in several different models as well. Each offers something special and you might fight it useful to compare their variations.

Blue 300 Firm

iComfot Blue 300 Mattress Layers Diagram
The iComfort Blue 300 by Serta

Features a 4-layer foam design supported by a foam core base, priced around $1500 for a queen size bed. This mattress features a TempActiv top layer, and EverCool memory foam layer, support foam, and deep reaction memory foam layers all resting on a solid Ultimate Edge foam base. Overall thickness is 11.25″, which is slightly more than the Blue 100. This mattress is advertised as an 8/10-10/10 firmness by Serta.

Blue Max 1000 Cushion Plush

The iComfort Blue Max 100 Mattress by Serta

Features a 5-layer comfort foam design supported by a foam core base, priced around $1700 for a queen size bed. Again, this mattress features a topmost layer of the TempActive gel memory foam, followed by 2 separate layers of EverCool memory foam, a layer of 2″ thick support foam, and a 7″ foam core base. This mattress is best characterized by its double layers of Supreme Memory Foam which accommodates a softer overall comfort level. This mattress is advertised as a 2/10-4/10 firmness by Serta.

Blue Max 1000 Cushion Firm

iComfort Blue Max 1000 Firm Memory Foam Mattress Layer Cutaway Diagram
The iComfort Blue Max 1000 Firm Features Several Layers of Targeted Foam and Memory Foam for a much Firmer Comfort Level

The Blue Max 1000 Firm has a 1″ thick TempActiv top layer, four more layers of foam and memory foam for a firmer comfort level, and rests on a 6″ Serta Ultimate Edge Foam Core layer. This mattress is similar to the Blue Max 1000 Plush but makes use of additional memory foam layers near the top of the mattress for a firmer comfort level, but not too firm. Advertised as a 5.5-7.5/10 firmness.

Blue Max 3000 Elite Plush

iComfort Blue Max 3000 Elite Plush Memory Foam Mattress Layer Cutaway Diagram
The iComfort Blue Max 3000 Elite Plush Features Serta’s Air Suspension™ Technology

The Blue Max 3000 Elite Plush features many of the same types of foam and memory foam layers as its kindred comparatives. The main discerning feature of the Elite series is the Air Suspension™ Technology layer that rests just above the Ultimate Edge foam support base layer. This layer is designed to help promote an even lighter, softer, and cooler comfort level than other Blue-series mattresses.

Blue Max 5000 Elite Luxury Firm

iComfort Blue Max 5000 Elite Luxury Firm memory foam mattress layer cutaway diagram
The iComfort Blue Max 5000 Elite Luxury Firm mattress features two layers of Deep Response memory foam and Serta’s Air Suspension technology

We’ll be honest: there is a trend among the iComfort mattresses that the more buzzwords in the name—the higher the price. The Blue Max 5000 Elite Luxury Firm mattress boasts the largest number of buzzwords and is correctly characterized as the “top-of-the-line” among iComfort models. This mattress is best understood by its double layers of Deep Response memory foam and a layer of Air Suspension polymer just above the base foam layer. Serta rates the firmness of this mattress as a 5/10 comfort level.

Size & Pricing

The iComfort Blue 100 comes in all standard bed sizes, including California King. This mattress is among the thinnest of the iComfort memory foam mattresses and would likely look a bit out of place without a set of box springs. Unless you’ve got a platform or adjustable platform bed—those accommodate mattresses without box springs quite well. The iComfort Blue 100 is approximately 10″ in thickness and a queen size weighs about 90lbs. The Blue 100  is available directly from Serta, through authorized local dealers, and several online retailers such as Amazon. The Queen size mattress starts out priced at $1,110 though it may be available for less during certain promotions. Certainly not one of the most affordable mattresses we’ve reviewed but well within the range of what we consider reasonable.

Shipping, Warranty & In-Home Trial

The iComfort Blue 100 is a bed-in-box mattress and ships for free via standard ground carriers such as UPS or FedEx. The mattress will arrive in a box approximately 16″ x 16″ x 48″ in size which contains the iComfort in a vacuum-sealed plastic wrapping. This may seem unconventional—even downright strange—but this type of mattress shipping has become the new normal. The iComfort is backed by Serta’s standard Limited 10-Year warranty and features a 100-Night In-Home Trial.

iComfort Memory Foam Mattresses Come in Several Different Models

Serta is one of the biggest names in the mattress industry and has helped pioneer many of the textile technology that we mattress aficionados have come to love. Their products are going to be slightly more expensive than comparative bed-in-a-box brands but offer a better assurance of having construction materials and designs that are well-researched and will last. Serta also offers foundations (a.k.a box springs) designed specifically for the iComfort. These are available in a 9″ thickness or 6″ low profile design. We assume the ship free as well but would urge you to check with your retailer before purchase. We did not have the opportunity to review the foundations. Read through our bed and mattress size guide to better understand which size is best for your bed.

Final Thoughts

The iComfort Blue Max 100 memory foam mattress is a great choice for side sleepers and those under 225-250 pounds, as is common advice for most memory foam mattresses. This is a great choice for anyone looking for a mattress to help lower back pain throughout the night. Many reviews of this mattress specifically mention how much quickly their back pain went away after switching to the iComfort Blue 100. Overall, this is a great mattress and we’d recommend it to just about anyone. You’ll pay ~10% more than you would on a comparable model from other direct-to-consumer sources but get all the benefits and assurance of buying from one of the biggest names in the industry.

iComfort Blue 100 by Serta
The iComfort Blue 100 by Serta is a high-quality gel memory foam mattress made by one of the biggest names in mattresses. It ships free, comes with an in-home trial, and 10-year warranty. We feel this mattress is about 10% pricier than comparative models from other brands. Considering that 10% buys the trust and assurance of Serta we feel it's still worth giving strong consideration.

Beautyrest Black Calista by Serta-Simmons

Beautyrest Black Calista

The Beautyrest Black Calista is the entry-level mattress by Serta-Simmons. This mattress features a hybrid memory foam microcoil design and offers one of the firmest night’s sleep you’re likely to get without it becoming uncomfortable. Serta-Simmons has faced some tremendous competition from bed-in-a-box brands recently but their Beautyrest Black collection gives buyers a strong reason to reconsider.

Serta-Simmons Beautyrest line is one of their most successful mattress lines. These mattresses continually set sales records and receive excellent reviews.  Recently, Serta-Simmons announced an expansion of the line to include several different pricing options all with unique features. The Beautyrest Black line features their patented Micro Diamond Memory foam, triple-stranded microcoils, and gel foam in all the right places. The Calista is the entry-level mattress in this lineup and we recently had the opportunity to test out the extra-firm version. It felt like a rock in all the right ways.

Serta Simmons Beautyrest Black Calista

Layers of Luxury

The Beautyrest Black Calista features an advanced layer design to offer an almost mysteriously well-balanced sleeping experience. It features gel, foam, memory foam, diamond black memory foam, and even has some microcoils tossed in for good measure. It’s one of the more impressive mattresses we’ve seen and it’s only the entry level mattress of the Serta-Simmons Beautyrest Black lineup. Let’s take a closer look at what makes this mattress worth writing about.

SurfaceCool Fiber

The SurfaceCool fiber is a feature of most (if not all) of the Serta-Simmons Beautyrest mattresses. This patented layer is made of TENCEL fibers designed to dissipate body heat throughout the night. Not only is this material soft and smooth as silk its your first line of defense against getting too hot at night.

GelTouch & AirCool Memory Foam

Remember when memory foam was thought to be the end-all be-all for luxury comfort in mattresses? It wasn’t that long ago, we’re not that old! Memory foam is still regarded as offering the best contour support but people quickly grew tired of its heat retention. The Beautyrest lineup features Serta-Simmons’ AirCool memory foam material that helps to promote greater airflow. The GelTouch material is infused throughout to provide even better contour support than traditional memory foam.

Micro Diamond Technology

What says luxury better than diamonds? The Beautyrest Black Calista features a memory foam infused with diamond nanoparticles (diamond dust) that help draw heat away from your body during the night. This is yet another way this mattress is designed to keep you from overheating at night.

Triple Stranded Microcoils

Traditional innerspring mattresses do one thing really well: they keep things cool. The Calista mattress is a hybrid memory foam + innerspring design that features a layer of individually-wrapped microcoils designed to help support one’s weight more effectively and to let the mattress breath.

Calista Mattress Material Layer Cutaway
The Beautyrest Black Calista features several layers of contouring and airflow promoting materials

Pricing, Warranty & In-Home Trials

The Beautyrest Black Calista isn’t available for direct purchase from the Beautyrest website. Instead, one must either find an authorized local dealer or an authorized online dealer such as Wayfair. Below you’ll find a table with sizing information for the Calista. Note: the price will vary depending on where you purchase your Calista from. Check out our article on bed and mattress sizes to better understand how to know you’re getting the right size mattress.

Size Weight Thickness Price
Twin XL 73lbs 12.5″ $1,349*
Full 95lbs 12.5″ $1,469*
Queen 113lbs 12.5″ $1,799*
King 144lbs 12.5″ $2,299*
Cal King 148lbs 12.5″ $2,299*

*Reflect prices at the time of this review. Current pricing may vary depending on sales, retailer policies, or seasonal variations.

In-Home Trial

Depending on where you buy from, you’re likely to be offered a generous in-home trial period during which you are free to return your mattress for a full refund. The Beautyrest Calista is sold through authorized retailers, as opposed to direct-to-consumer pricing, and therefore the in-home trials are subject to retailer preference. In other words, if you aren’t offered an in-home trial period you should go somewhere else. We feel that 100+ nights is a standard evaluation period these days, comparatively-speaking.

10-Year Warranty

The Beautyrest Black Calista comes with the standard Serta-Simmons 10-year limited warranty. As far as warranties go its pretty standard and leans towards the extra-wordy side of things. One notable caveat is that the warranty doesn’t cover the cost of shipping or transportation (except in California) should there be an issue with the mattress. Probably don’t tear off the tags either.

The Beautyrest Black Calista has extremely well crafted embroidery and seams

Final Thoughts

Serta-Simmons’ Beautyrest Black line of mattresses features some of the most luxurious mattresses on the market today. The Calista is the entry-level mattress in this family and features a unique layer of microcoils, diamond memory foam, and is one of the firmest mattresses we’ve ever tested. If you’re looking for a luxury quality mattress from a brand that you know and trust the Calista is for you. Our only criticism (also one of our primary compliments) of this mattress is that it is really firm. This mattress wouldn’t be a good pick for anyone not seeking an 8/10-9/10 firmness. For those that are; you’ll be hard-pressed to find a better choice!

Beautyrest Black Calista
Beautyrest Black Calista
The Beautyrest Black Calista is a super firm luxury mattress that's a member of one of the most popular luxury lines of mattresses on the planet. Its diamond memory foam and triple-stranded microcoil design make it one of the best firm mattresses we've slept on in quite some time. Definitely not a good choice for those that like a softer sleep.

Idle Sleep Double-Sided Hybrid Latex Mattress

Hybrid Latex Mattress from Idle Sleep

The hybrid latex mattress from Idle Sleep is one of the highest quality mattresses we’ve come across and offers a quality of sleep unmatched by most of the competition out there. This mattress features double-sided latex for flippable firmness selection, a middle layer of microcoils, and everything is wrapped in organic cotton. We were blown away by the performance of this mattress and are excited to tell you all about it.

Double-Sided Latex Design

Natural latex is one of the highest-quality materials used on mattresses today. Its dense and flexible composition makes it ideal for weight distribution and contour support. Latex is a naturally hypoallergenic material (assuming you don’t have a latex allergy of course) and is also naturally antibacterial. Compared to memory foam, latex mattresses offer a bit more spring in their overall experience and are much less often reported as “swallowing” one up in the middle of the night!

best luxury bed in a box mattress we’ve seen and we’d recommend it to anyone—including friends and family.

Idle Sleep’s double-sided latex hybrid has brought one of the most original mattress designs that we’ve seen to market in a big kind of way. This mattress features two natural Talalay latex layers separated by a middle layer of 6” thick layer of edge-to-edge microcoils (meaning they completely cover that layer.) Unless you tell Idle otherwise, this mattress will ship out with the topmost latex layer being an 8/10 firmness and the bottom-most latex layer being a 6.5/10 firmness. This allows one to flip the mattress over and completely change the comfort level.

Breathable & Organic Materials

Latex is naturally much more breathable than most memory foams used in the mattress market today. The latex used in mattresses is poured in a porous fashion that leaves holes to allow for greater flexibility, which also results in better breathability. Idle Sleep’s hybrid latex mattress goes one step farther—actually adding a layer of open-air “Quantum” microcoils in the middle of things. Not only does this provide a really unique experience in the context of latex, but it also promotes a higher level of airflow.

an organic cotton + natural latex combination is about as eco-friendly and toxin-free as one can get

One other major advantage of microcoils run in an edge-to-edge manner is overall edge support for the mattress. This layout design helps to prevent “rolling” sensations when one rests near the edge of the mattress. In addition to the micro-coils, Idle has chosen to wrap the entire mattress in organic cotton. In the world of mattresses, an organic cotton + natural latex combination is about as eco-friendly and toxin-free as one can get!

natural latex mattress closeup
The Hybrid Latex Mattress from Idle has two sleepable sides and is much thicker than most mattresses

Long Lasting Comfort

All mattresses have a life expectancy and no one should expect anything to last forever. Compared to many other types of mattresses on the market, natural latex has a much longer life expectancy. Natural latex mattresses often last as many as 15 years without having any noticeable change in shape or performance. The Idle Sleep latex hybrid offers an even longer life expectancy through its double-sided design. If your mattress starts losing its zest—just flip it over and you’ll think you have a brand new mattress! Just to be sure your mattress outlasts any others on the market—Idle includes a lifetime warranty with all of their products. Lifetime—meaning you’ll never have to buy another mattress for as long as you live!

The microcoils in the Idle Sleep latex hybrid allow much greater airflow compared to conventional latex designs

Warranty, Shipping, & Free Trials

Mattresses are among the most over-marketed products in the world today. There’s little chance one can go online anymore without being blindsided by a plethora of mattress ads, articles, and reviews. We’re of the mind that more advertising isn’t usually a good thing—but with mattresses, we tend to consider some exceptions. Mattress brands like Idle have forever changed the insidious markups and disingenuous practices within the mattress industry. Rather than spending $5,000 on a luxury mattress from a local mattress store, consumers are now able to buy from brands such as Idle Sleep directly. This passes along a tremendous amount of savings, but also comes with some extra considerations that need to be made. Below you’ll find a quick overview of some of the company policies we felt deserved mentioning. For a full overview, we recommend reading the official Idle Sleep Hybrid Mattress FAQ section.

Free Shipping

Free shipping for something as large as a mattress may seem like to much to hope for, or at least not something you’d be surprised if it weren’t included. Direct-to-consumer brands such as Idle have rethought the entire manufacturing process in such a way that allows them to ship their products directly to consumers via standard ground carriers such as FedEx or UPS with no charge to consumers. You should be aware however that the larger latex mattresses out there, such as Idle’s luxury double-sided hybrid, are often required to shift via freight due to their weight.

Lifetime Warranty

Another magnanimous by-product of the bed-in-a-box mattress revolution has been incredible to extended warranties. Historically, mattresses manufacturers were considered to be going above and beyond their call of duty when providing warranties greater than 5 years. A common mattress warranty is 10 years which is arguably the industry standard. Idle Sleep offers an unheard of lifetime warranty to ensure that buyers can rid themselves of the arduous task of buying a new mattress once and for all. Once you buy an Idle mattress—you can be done.

Risk-Free Trial Period

One of the biggest fears when buying a mattress from an online brand is the uncertainty that comes with not having physically slept on the bed. Sure, some people have probably had a chance to try out these types of mattresses at some point but the majority of buyers are, essentially, taking a leap of faith when buying a mattress online. Idle Sleep recognizes that no two sleepers are the same and that promising satisfaction would be as shady as one can get. Rather than making empty promises, Idle Sleep mattresses are part of a 120-night in-home trial guarantee that states each buyer has the right to sleep on their mattress for 120 nights without being committed to buying. That’s to say, if you buy the Idle Sleep hybrid latex mattress, sleep on it for almost 4 months, and then decide you don’t like it—you can get a full refund!

A Personal Perspective

Reviewed by Claire from Pennsylvania

I was given the opportunity to sleep on an Idle Sleep double-sided hybrid latex mattress for 2 weeks and can say it was the best 2 weeks of sleep I’ve ever had. I’d heard people (mostly my chiropractor) rave about how comfortable natural latex mattresses are but hadn’t ever tried one myself. My husband and I try to be as health-conscious as possible and the organic cotton cover of this mattress really got us excited.

How Firm is the Mattress?

I’d say this mattress is somewhere in the 8/10 firmness range for the top side and somewhere in the 5.5-6/10 range for the underside. I’ve never had a strong preference for mattress firmness but don’t like really soft mattresses because I feel like they cause lower back pain. This mattress had a great level of firmness and knowing that I can flip it over if I want something else is nice to know.

Did This Mattress Improve Sleep Quality?

We have currently been sleeping on a mattress that our in-laws gave us without ever giving it much thought. In hindsight, it’s probably considered to be barely higher quality than a sheet of plywood wrapped in a bedsheet. Since we’ve been sleeping on the Idle hybrid latex mattress I’ve found that I actually get excited about bedtime, and have been enjoying reading at night much more than usual.

What’s the Best Thing About this Mattress?

Wow, this is a tough question to answer honestly. I really like everything about the mattress but if I had to pick one I guess I’d have to say the responsiveness. It’s hard to describe really, but this mattress feels like it pushes back more than other mattresses out there. Rather than feeling like my body is a burden to the mattress each night, I feel like I’m laying on something solid that cares about me!

Idle’s mattresses work great on platform beds, the floor, and even kitsch designs transcendent of any common design category.

Final Thoughts

The Idle Sleep Hybrid Latex mattress is a luxury mattress sold a below wholesale cost of comparable store brands. This mattress offers an organic cotton cover, double-sided Talalay latex layers, and an ample middle layer of microcoils to provide an all-night cool. Latex mattresses are incredible experiences and we’d recommend this mattress to anyone seeking a top quality example of just how comfortable and restorative such mattresses can be. The only precaution we’d offer is that this mattress is heavy and you’ll likely need someone to help you position it before unboxing. Overall, this is the best luxury bed in a box mattress we’ve seen and we’d recommend it to anyone—including friends and family. Don’t forget to check out our bed and mattress size guide to help ensure your new mattress is going to actually fit inside your bed frame!

Layla Sleep Memory Foam Mattress

Layla Sleep Memory Foam Mattress

Layla Sleep offers some of the most unique sleep products we’ve had the pleasure of experiencing so far. Their mattresses and pillows are designed with serious sleep issues in mind and are designed to help support restorative and rejuvenating sleep patterns. The Layla Sleep memory foam mattress is a copper infused, dual-firmness, flippable design that not only looks incredible but also sleeps incredibly.

Inspired Memory Foam Design

The Layla Sleep memory foam mattress offers a traditional memory foam experience and is an ideal option for those seeking pressure point relief. The first attribute of the Layla Sleep memory foam mattress that makes it stand apart from competitors is its flippable design that allows for multiple firmness selections. We’re calling this “flippable firmness” with a smile on our face. Another unique design feature of the Layla mattress is the copper-infused memory foam that is used throughout its layers.

Heat Control & Antibacterial

Copper, among many other things, has both thermo-conductive and antimicrobial properties. Copper nanoparticles are quite effective in killing many of the nasty kinds of bacteria that are known to make us humans sick [1]. We spend a lot of time rolling around on our mattresses, and it is scary to think about how quickly they could make us sick should dangerous bacteria find their way there. Layla sleep’s copper-infused memory foam gives sleepers an extra defensive layer against this. Copper is also a tremendous conductor of heat and can be useful when trying to keep things cool. In fact, Copper helps keeps things cool so effectively that Engineers recommend it for use in Nuclear Reactors! If copper can keep a nuclear reactor cool, you know it can help keep a bed cool!

Layla Sleep Memory Foam Mattress Layer Diagram
The Layla Sleep memory foam mattress features a copper-infused memory foam on either side for flippable firmness options.

Versatile Layered Design

The Layla Sleep memory foam mattress uses a multi-layer design that is common among many other memory foam mattresses. This design features a contouring memory foam top layer, a pressure distributing and airflow promoting polyfoam underlayer, and a thick, dense foam layer for foundational support. The Layla mattress stands out from similar such designs by its inclusion of yet another memory foam layer under the foundation layer.

Having a second layer of memory foam under a mattress may sound like a waste of material at first glance but its purpose is quite simple—it allows one to flip the mattress over and have a firmer overall mattress! This unique design provides both firm and soft options to help accommodate sleep preferences of all ranges.  Even if one were to prefer sleeping on a soft mattress most of the time, a firmer sleep could be better should one have a back injury or another issue that needed a firmer support system, even if only temporarily.

Rather than buying a new mattress of sleeping somewhere new during recovery, all one must do with the Layla Sleep memory foam mattress is to simply unzip the cover, flip the mattress, and zip it back up! Pretty simple right?. Personally, we’d like to see one in every guest bedroom of our houses to offer all our friends and family the option of firm or soft while they visit. On the other hand, we might not tell them all about it lest they decide to move in!

Personal Experience

As Described by Laura from Minnesota

The Layla Sleep memory foam mattress feels a lot like other memory foam mattresses at first. You feel a slight sinking in feeling (though not a trapped feeling) that feels more pronounced when in a side sleeping position. For anyone unfamiliar with memory foam mattresses this might feel quite strange at first. I would describe this mattress as being slightly less cumbersome than other memory foam mattresses but still similar in overall initial feel.

Layla’s double-sided “flippable firmness” design makes this a mattress perfect for those among us that like to change things up now and then

The copper-infused memory foam does seem to help the mattress sleep cooler overall, though we’d also point out the poly foam layer underneath the memory foam of the soft side’s top layer also helps with that. As opposed to other mattresses that position solid memory foam layers on top of other solid layers of foam, this egg carton like design allows a higher level of breathability.

The ability to flip this mattress between the firm and soft is incredible and very convenient. The cover of the mattress unzips around the bottom edge in such a way that allows the mattress to be flipped, zipped back up, and appear just the same as before. Essentially, this mattress does function like having a second mattress. Maybe your back hurts, maybe you’re in a different mood, or maybe you’re just bored—regardless, having the option to change firmness levels is incredible, and the Layla mattress delivers.

This mattress also just looks cool. This isn’t a factor for many people, especially considering the first thing that happens to a mattress is that it gets covered in bedding, but I’ve learned that such attention to detail is often a sign of higher quality products. Overall, I feel like this is one of the better memory foam mattresses out there. I would recommend it to anyone that likes memory foam but feels that it sleeps just a bit too hot. Also, I’d recommend this mattress to anyone looking to try a memory foam mattress for the first time. The flippable design offers a lot of versatility and allows one to change their mind on a daily basis!

Size Matters

The Layla Sleep memory foam mattress is great. It has a unique design, copper nanoparticles to better performance, and offers both a firm and soft sleeping experience. Before you run off to order yours, however, make careful consideration of which size will work best for you. This mattress comes in every standard mattress size and is 10″ in thickness. This mattress is an ideal fit for mattress foundations and platform beds, but you may want to consider having some sort of box spring setup when using this mattress with a traditional bed design. We’ve got a great article on how to help with that. This mattress isn’t a particularly heavy one which means most people won’t have any trouble flipping it over or positioning it after opening it. Nevertheless, the Queen and King size mattresses do weigh upwards of 80 and 90 pounds which aren’t exactly light compared to most household items. Check out the chart below to get a better idea of the size and weights associated with this mattress.

Size & Thickness

Size Dimensions Weight

Warranty, Ordering, & Returns

Truth be told, no matter how much due diligence once affords it’s never possible to be certain a mattress is right for you. Even when having slept on one before, felt on in a store, or been recommended one by a health professional; mattresses are a very personal product and don’t reveal their suture until one has slept on them for a while. One set of attributes we take into consideration when reviewing mattresses are those which allow for a first-hand experience without committing to buying a mattress, the process of ordering and receiving the mattress, and the warranty and guarantee offered by a company to ensure their product will continue to provide a good night’s sleep should one choose to purchase from them. Below you’ll find our interpretation of all the important facts and figures of a purchase made with Layla. For a more complete account, we suggest you consult the official FAQ page on their website.

Layla Sleep is among one of the best “bed in a box” mattress brands on the market today (at least in our opinion.) Not only are these mattresses designed for easy shipping but they are sold directly to consumers through Layla’s own website, and select other online retailers. These aren’t mattresses you’ll find in most local mattress stores and that means you won’t be paying the markup that comes along with mattresses sold in local stores. When compared to mattresses of similar quality and size that are available from stores such as Mattress Firm, Layla Sleep’s memory foam mattress is, essentially, available at wholesale pricing.

Another characteristic of “bed in a box brands”—perhaps their hallmark characteristic—is the unique packaging process in which they’re shipped. Rather than having to contract with freight carriers, arrange for someone to special-deliver the mattress into your home, or arrange for local pickups, Layla Sleep is able to ship their mattresses through standard ground carriers such as FedEx or UPS—for free! Now, to be fair, nearly all bed in a box brands offer this service so it isn’t something that necessarily separates Layla from the competition. However, it’s just one more thing we feel that they’re doing right.

120 Night In-Home Trial

Another thing we think Layla Sleep does well is their offering of a no-risk 120 night in-home trial for their mattresses. This allows customers to purchase their mattress, have it delivered, and sleep on it for 120 nights before they’re financially committed. During this time frame, anyone can decide to return their Layla Sleep mattress for a 100% refund—no questions asked. Similar to free shipping, this approach has become quite popular among other mattress brands as well and isn’t something that makes the entire case for why one should consider a Layla Sleep mattress. Again, it’s just one more thing that Layla is doing right.

Lifetime Warranty

Ah, the warranty. We’ve heard arguments from many manufacturers that a 10-year warranty is the longest acceptable warranty to offer for a mattress. These manufacturers would argue that after 10 years a mattress becomes to unsanitary to sleep on so one should be buying another mattress anyway. We believe this may have a bit of truth to it but still feel that longer warranties are better. Layla Sleep agrees and backs their memory foam mattress with a lifetime warranty that covers indentations more than 1 inch in depth, general sagging, or overall loss of height for their mattress. If you spill a glass of wine trying to do a bounce test, however—that mess is on you!

Can you imagine having to re-roll a mattress and vacuum pack it into a 24x24x48 box? No? Unless you have an oversized industrial vacuum packer in your garage you’re probably with us on this one! Returning a mattress sounds like a nightmare but Layla Sleep makes the process as easy as possible. Rather than requiring you to ship your product back to them they will arrange a pickup of your mattress and donate it to a local charity. They get a tax write-off on a product they can’t resell and you don’t have to terrorize the clerks at your local UPS store! Before you rely on this, however, we’d suggest contacting your local charitable donation centers and double check their policy on accepting mattresses. Sometimes, there are policies that restrict the donation of mattresses. Hard to say where or why—so just check first!

Overall Impressions

Layla Sleep’s memory foam mattress is beyond cool—both in terms of performance and aesthetics! The copper nanoparticle infused memory foam may be one of the most-unique concepts we’ve seen. The science we dug up on the topic confirms it’s much more than just a marketing ploy too. In addition to the antibacterial and cooling action of copper, Layla’s double-sided “flippable firmness” design makes this a mattress perfect for those among us that like to change things up now and then (guilty) or just aren’t sure what they want (guilty again.) This memory foam mattress is backed by a great warranty, in-home trial, shipping, and returns policy. We can’t promise you’ll love this mattress but we will say that Layla Sleep’s memory foam mattress is one of the best memory foam mattresses we’ve seen and we’d recommend it to friends and family.

Layla Sleep Memory Foam Mattress
Layla Memory Foam Mattress
The Layla Sleep memory foam mattress may be one of the most uniquely-conceived designs we've seen. Its copper-infused memory foam and flippable firmness design set it far apart from most other comparable mattresses. In addition to being a great sleeping and well-designed mattress—it also looks beautiful as well. We fell in love with this mattress and would recommend it to anyone interested in a memory foam experience to remember.

Sleep Science: Quick Tips on Finding the Best Mattress

Mattress Science

Mattresses are arguably one of the most influential factors in the quality of sleep. We spend nearly one-third of our lives on mattresses yet rarely do we consider them from a scientific perspective. This article details some of the science behind the mattresses to give those searching for the perfect mattress better insight into the attributes and features on which they should be most focused.

Getting Perspective

Before we start, let’s take a moment to reflect on the mattress industry as a whole. There is a lot of money floating around in this market which comes with a proportional amount of marketing and advertising. When such great amounts of money are involved there will always be a potential for conflicts of interest. As a general rule, one should never attribute to much credence to what a mattress company says about their products—other than the return policies, shipping fees, and warranty. Aside from these attributes mattresses don’t differ that much. Sure, a waterbed is going to be different than a natural latex mattress, but most latex mattresses aren’t going to differ in any Earth-shattering ways, other than the mattress sizes of course! Keep these thoughts in mind as we discuss some of the less marketing-centric information about mattresses.

The Ideal Firmness

What We’ve Seen

Mattress firmness is one of the most important factors in affecting one’s experience while sleeping. Those that like firm mattresses won’t settle for a plush featherlike sleep while those that wish to feel as if they were sleeping on clouds don’t want something that won’t let them sink in. In our Better Sleep Survey, we found that the firmness of a mattress didn’t seem to have much impact on people’s reported quality of sleep. What seems important in this equation is that, before buying a mattress, one has experienced different levels of mattress firmness and can ensure they’ve gotten the one they like best.

What Science Says

One study conducted in 2015 sought to describe the impact that a medium-firm mattress would have on alleviating musculoskeletal pain. Researchers separated participants of this study into two groups, those sleeping on Medium Firm Mattresses (MFM) and those sleeping on Very Firm Mattresses (VFM). To gauge the impact of these different types of mattresses on levels of pain, participants were asked to complete the Pittsburg Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) and the Pain Visual Analog Scale (P-VAS). These two testing methods can take a person’s opinion of how much pain they are feeling and convert it into a number (not their Sleep Number.) Researchers found the medium-firm mattress to significantly-reduce report pain regardless of age, body mass index (BMI), or the use of sleep aids [1].

Addressing Lower Back Pain

What We’ve Seen

Lower back pain is a plague of misery for those unable to effectively address it. This type of chronic pain comes in many shapes and sizes and may be caused by many different things. Poor quality of sleep is one thing common to many of those experiencing chronic back pain. Even in cases where a low-quality mattress doesn’t cause back pain, it can often be exacerbated. That’s to say; if you are sleeping on a low-quality mattress your back pain is only going to get worse! That’s easy enough to believe, but it doesn’t offer much insight into how to find the best mattress for back pain. Remembering that everyone will respond differently to different types of mattresses; we generally believe that medium-firm memory foam mattresses hold the highest promise for those suffering from back pain. Memory foam has a unique ability to conform closely to the contours of the human body while still offering quality weight distribution. Most hybrid mattresses fall into this category as well since their topmost layers are often memory foam.

What Science Says

This consideration is closely related to the research just mentioned finding the ideal firmness. However, that study’s focus was on whole-body pain and didn’t isolate many concerns specific to the lower back. Another 2005 study, much smaller in scope, sought to investigate the dynamics of how different types of weight support affect lower back health. Researchers designed this investigation under the assumption that lumbar support while laying down is likely as important as lumbar support while in a seated position (a theory with ample scientific support.) To investigate, researchers used an inflatable device to place added contact pressure on the lumbar area and measured the impact on weight distribution in the lumbar, pelvic, and thoracic regions. Researchers found that, when the added pressure was applied to the lumbar area, better weight distribution was seen on the body as a whole. This was noted by a decreased pressure seen in both the thoracic and pelvic regions. Simply put; lumbar support takes the stress off the rest of the body.

Considerations for Allergies

What We’ve Seen

Allergies have become rampant in the recent generation, and science is at somewhat of a loss in describing the prevalence of allergic symptoms among younger people. There are arguments for over-sanitization, the overuse of antibiotics, and even the misuse of vaccines. It’s a mess—no one has any straight answers. Fortunately, the impact that mattresses have on allergies are limited to traditional allergic responses to household compounds like dust mites. Common sense says that washing your sheets regularly and utilizing a mattress topper can help prevent the accumulation of dust mites to such a degree that one might wake up sneezing or overly groggy for no apparent reason.

What Science Says

A 1991 study published in the journal Clinical and Experimental Allergy investigated whether or not the type of mattress one slept on had any notable impact on the rate dust mites accumulated. They investigated this difference across waterbeds, traditional spring mattresses, and foam mattresses. The results described that regardless of mattress type, the same accumulation of dust mites was noted. Waterbeds did seem to have a slightly larger number, but the study wasn’t large enough to make any conclusive statements based on the statistical significance of that difference. What this study did find, however, was that the biggest factor was the types of sheets and room conditions. Synthetic sheets produced fewer amounts of dust mite concentration as did rooms with higher temperatures and lower humidity. So, if you wake up sneezing and wheezing in the mornings don’t start blaming your mattress until you’ve washed your sheets!

Final Thoughts

Mattress shopping can be a minefield of conflicting advertisements and outrageous claims of health benefits. There is enough evidence to suggest that certain mattress types, such as hybrids and memory foam mattresses, may offer better overall support for musculoskeletal concerns. These types of mattresses are commonly reported as beneficial by those sleeping on them and are generally regarded as the best option for those seeking to support spinal health. Regardless of the science and our personal experiences with mattresses we still maintain that the most important factor to consider when shopping for mattresses is the return policy.

Cooling Gel Memory Foam Mattress by Tomorrow Sleep

Tomorrow Sleep Memory Foam Mattress Homerefinery

Memory foam mattresses are a novel take on the conventional sleeping habitat. Where we humans were once subjected to sleeping on piles of hay (if we were lucky) we now have all our curves and shapes gently supported throughout the night. Memory foam mattresses offer superior all-night support for elbows, hips, shoulders, and especially knees. Tomorrow Sleep’s new memory foam mattress is the latest such design to hit the market, and we’re here to rave about it!

Tomorrow Sleep is a brand we know and love. They’re relatively new to the bed-in-a-box market but are the brainchild of the Serta-Simmons legacy. You’ll not find another direct-to-consumer mattress brand with as much experience at giving buyers what they want as Tomorrow Sleep! We’ve had the pleasure of testing several of their mattresses (as well as a lot of other mattresses!) and we feel their gel-memory foam is one of the best of its class.

Tomorrow Sleep memory Foam Layers HomeRefinery
The Tomorrow Sleep Memory Foam Mattress offers a layered design for better overall support and breathability.

Triple Layer Support

Memory foam mattresses come in many shapes, sizes, and compromises in overall design quality. Yes, you read that last part right—many memory foam mattresses offer little more “memory” foam than a half-inch slice on top meant to disguise the regular-old-uncomfortable foam beneath! The Tomorrow Sleep memory foam mattress features a 1” thick top layer of breathable memory foam meant to promote extra airflow, a secondary 2“ thick layer of contour-focused memory foam, and the third layer of denser polyfoam to offer rigid support. This dynamic blend is like a soft hand, connected to a gentle arm, attached to a powerful torso—all focused on providing your body with all-night comfort.

Natural & Chemical Free

Off-gassing is a common issue among memory foam mattresses where gaseous chemicals are released before initial use. This phenomenon is caused by a family of chemicals known as Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) and is generally regarded as being really nasty. One of the most outrageous places these compounds are found in crib mattresses where infants are exposed to a constant flow of these toxic compounds. Tomorrow Sleep’s memory foam mattress is made with materials that are Certi-PUR certified to be free of these types of nasty little ingredients. For more information on just how much better Certi-PUR certified products are, check out their website.

Our Impressions

Memory foam mattresses are incredible for those that love to sleep on their sides. The unparalleled contour support helps reduce pressure points throughout the night, helping to stay immersed in those deep sleep cycles which give that refreshed feeling upon waking. The Tomorrow Sleep memory foam mattress is, in our opinion, one of the best on the market to date. This opinion involves several factors, each of which are due some context. Take a moment with us here, and we’ll guarantee—if you’re in the market for a memory foam mattress—that you won’t be disappointed.

This mattress is designed for sale on the larger consumer market so, expectedly-so, its firmness is somewhat in the middle of the road. We’d say this mattress falls somewhere between a 5.5 and 7 on a firmness scale of 0-10—with a 10 being the firmest. Unless you’ve got an affinity for ultra-plush or ultra-firm mattresses, you’ll find this one to be just right.

Overall quality is, in our opinion, where the Tomorrow Sleep memory foam mattress really shines. Decades of mattress manufacturing know-how back Tomorrow Sleep’s products, which becomes clearly-evident in one’s first impression. The overall quality of this mattress is higher than any other similarly-priced memory foam mattress we’ve seen so far. Our overall opinion of this mattress is that for the price offered; its overall quality is second to none and we consider it one of the best mattresses around.

If you’ve been searching for a new mattress for any reasonable length of time, then you’ve likely heard this term getting tossed around. Off-gassing occurs when mattresses containing VOCs (those nasty chemicals we mentioned earlier) are released before first use. This nasty phenomenon is pretty much experienced solely among mattresses that are vacuum-sealed for shipping since the airtight quarters prohibit the gasses from escaping. The Tomorrow Sleep memory foam mattresses Certi-PUR certified materials ensure you’ll experience no such issues. We did notice some slight chemical-y odor before initial use but believe it’s just the smell of new foam materials. This odor was never unpleasant and disappeared quickly.

Pricing is another area you’ll find the Tomorrow Sleep memory foam mattress to really outshine the competition. The $500-$800 price range, in our opinion, has been suffering from a distinct lack of buyer options for some time. Tomorrow Sleep’s memory foam mattress is priced at ~$800 for a Queen size but can be had for ~$675 with their promotional discounts. Don’t worry about missing the deals though—it’s been our experience that mattress companies always have some sale going on! Nonetheless, the final price one can expect to pay for the Tomorrow Sleep memory foam mattress falls into a price range that we feel was in dire need of more quality options.

Tomorrow Sleep Memory Foam Mattress
Tomorrow Sleep offers a 365 Night In-Home Trial and 10 Year Warranty Program

Warranties & Support

When shopping for a new mattress, at some point, one has to take a leap of faith and make a decision. There’s no way to be 100% confident that choice will be the best option—which is why it’s so important to understand the return policies, warranties, and any other legal jargon you might have to deal with. Tomorrow Sleep has, in our opinion, go out of their way to provide a risk-free way to try their products, make the entire buying process as comfortable as possible, and offer a very legitimate warranty for their memory foam mattress. Below you’ll find a quick rundown of the basic service options offered for the Tomorrow Sleep memory foam mattress but, if you’re seriously considering making a purchase, we suggest you read their customer service page for a more detailed explanation.

Free-Shipping & Discounted Price

Pretty standard these days, but a must-have consideration in our opinion. Free shipping and discounts are built into the price of any product, but it almost feels like an insult when a manufacturer doesn’t offer them. Nonetheless, Tomorrow Sleep’s packaging process allows them to fold, roll, and vacuum-seal their products into a conveniently-sized box that ships free via carries such as FedEx or UPS. Your new mattress will arrive on your doorstep just like a new pillow might—albeit a much larger and heavier pillow!

Shit happens—all the time. Even the best products are susceptible to having issues, so it’s important to know that manufacturers are willing to make things right in such cases. Tomorrow Sleep’s memory foam mattress is covered by a 10-year warranty during which time you can rest assured that a full replacement would be provided should you find anything wrong with the mattress. A 10-year warranty is agreed upon by many industry analysts as being the maximum length of time that one should expect their mattress to last before it may become a health risk. This means that while your new mattress might last 20 years, it’d likely become quite unsanitary after the 10-year mark. Obviously, there’s no line in the sand to define at what point this might happen but 10-year warranties are a pretty standard way of saying “hey, don’t push your luck.”

In-Home Trial

In contrast to warranties, in-home-trial periods only get better with age! That’s to say; when buying a new mattress, you want to be able to try it out for as long as possible with the option of being able to get a refund. Even for those spending hours researching and comparing mattress, there is little absolution when it comes to knowing how a mattress will sleep—until it’s been slept on. Tomorrow Sleep’s memory foam mattress comes with a 365-day in-home-trial during which you’re free to return their mattress for a complete refund! That’s impressive in our opinion, and more than enough time to guarantee you know what you’re getting for your money.

Tomorrow Sleep also offers a wide range of sleep products in addition to their mattresses—their comforter and memory foam pillows can be seen here.

Overall Impressions

As you may have gleaned from our site, we spend a lot of time looking at mattresses. We’ve seen good mattresses, great mattresses, and we’ve also seen downright horrible mattresses. We’ve seen hybrid mattresses, organic mattresses, and even decent traditional coil mattresses—just kidding—those things cause nightmares. More to the point—Tomorrow Sleep’s memory foam mattress is an incredible product that’s available at an incredible price. We’d recommend anyone shopping for a memory foam mattress give serious consideration to this one and remember—you’ve got 365 days to decide whether you’re happy with your purchase!

SweetZzz Affluent Rest

Sweet Zzz is a relative newcomer to the mattress market so we wanted to take some time and share their product with our readers. Anyone having experienced a memory foam mattress has immediately-recognize how well these types of mattresses are able to provide support to elbows, knees, and shoulders. Memory foam allows pressure points to sink in deeply while still offering broader support to larger areas of the body. For many, including us, the true memory foam experience in most evident in firmer mattresses. The Affluent Rest by SweetZzz is, in our opinion, a firmer memory foam mattress. This is ideal for stomach or back sleepers for the lumbar support but also remains accommodating for side sleepers seeking support for proper spinal alignment.

SweetZzz Memory Foam Layers
The SweetZzz Affluent Rest features several layers of high-density memory foam.

Multiple Layers of Balanced Support

The SweetZzz Affluent Rest memory foam mattress is designed to contour, promote good airflow, and to offer a solid foundational support. This design has been realized by four distinct layers, each designed with a specific purpose in mind.

Layer One: 1” Natural Cotton

This layer is a breath of fresh air compared to many similarly-priced mattresses on the market. Whereas many mattress covers are skimpy little sheets of cotton, the Affluent Rest offers a thicker more immersive top cover. We’re a huge fan of natural cotton covers and are still hesitant to get on board with some of the newer hybrid materials.

Layer Two: 2” O-Cell Cooling Gel Memory Foam

This layer features a 5-pound density gel memory foam that’s been engineered to promote greater airflow. SweetZzz accomplished this by increasing the size of the cellular structures (pores) found in this material in such a way that, according to their website, increases airflow by 95%. One drawback to many memory foam mattresses is their retention of heat. The O-Cell technology from SweetZzz seems to dodge this issue with elegance.

Layer Three: 2” Premium O-Cell Memory Foam

Once you get deeper into a mattress, things become more about support than about cooling. Denser layers that offer less response and more support are ideal. This graduated approach is embodied in the SweetZzz Affluent Rest mattress by the inclusion of a 2” thick,  5-pound/cubic foot density memory foam layer underneath the gel memory foam layer. This material still features the O-Cell design to promote breathability but offers a firmer support.

Layer Four: Dense Support Base

The most effective design for memory foam mattresses, in our opinion, is one which features softer, contouring top layers which feature a more solid and rigid bottom layer for support. This allows for all the soft stuff to happen up top without compromising edge integrity of overall weight distribution. Just like one wouldn’t want to live in a house without a strong foundation—sleeping on a memory foam mattress without a solid bottom layer isn’t recommended either! The SweetZzz Affluent Rest has a 7” thick dense foam layer positioned beneath each of its topmost layers to offer this type of essential support.

The SweetZzz Affluent Rest is what we would consider a “true memory foam mattress”

Our Experience

Our experience with the SweetZzz Affluent Rest was a very positive experience and we would recommend anyone looking for a memory foam mattress that’s slightly firmer than most give it a try. This mattress is made with Certi-PUR certified materials which help reduce the overall odor initially. We noticed some slight odor, but nothing that we’d put into the category of off-gassing. The benefit of CertiPur-certified products is that they are free of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) which are responsible for very unpleasant odors as foam mattresses start to expand.

The Affluent Rest offers a true memory foam experience which isn’t something one is able to find among most other memory foam mattresses on today’s market.

We found this mattress to be ideal for stomach and back sleepers but also a doable option for side sleepers. We categorize this mattress to be a 6-7.5 on the firmness scale, though would point out that memory foam firmness is a bit more dynamic than other mattresses. That’s to say; while this mattress offers an overall medium-firm sleep it still provides very accommodating support for pressure points like elbows and shoulders. As with any memory foam mattress, we’d caution those unfamiliar with memory foam that this will be a very different experience compared to traditional mattresses or even some hybrid mattresses.

Try Before You Buy

No matter how much prior research is done, one has no way to be sure they’ve bought the best mattress for them until they’ve spent a few nights sleeping on it. SweetZzz offers a 100-Night in-home trial period during which you are free to sleep on one of their mattresses risk-free. That means after you buy the Affluent Rest mattress, if you decide it’s not the best mattress for you, you are able to return it up to 100 days later and receive a full refund. Many other mattress brands offer year-long trial periods but, in our opinion, there’s nothing you’ll learn after the first 30 days that you’ll find out on the 365th. After the in-home trial period is over the SweetZzz Affluent Rest is covered by a lifetime warranty. We’d point out that just because a mattress is covered for lifetime use doesn’t necessarily mean it’ll be sanitary for lifetime use. Nonetheless, a lifetime warranty means you’ll never have to think twice about the performance of your mattress.

Overall Impressions

SweetZzz is a relative newcomer and we were skeptical about the quality of their products—as we are with any new brand. We are no longer skeptical towards the quality of SweetZzz mattresses after having the opportunity to test the Affluent Rest memory foam mattress for ourselves and would recommend them to anyone looking for a quality memory foam mattress. The unique O-Cell foam materials in this mattress offer a very breathable experience and are well-supported by a denser foundation. We’d like to see the price come down a bit but, overall, find this mattress to be an exceptional memory foam option.

Overall Rating
We found the SweetZzz Affluent Rest memory foam mattress to be surprisingly high quality, considering our past experiences with memory foam mattresses. This mattress' thick cotton top layer provides a unique sense of non-foam while the dense secondary memory foam layers make for a "true" memory foam experience. We feel like this mattress is slightly overpriced but, then again, we also feel like it's one of the best memory foam mattresses we've laid hands on. If you're looking for a true memory foam experience the Affluent Rest from SweetZzz should be high on your list of potential options.

Bed & Mattress Sizes Guide

The search for beds and mattresses can leave the best of us drained. There are tons of options, countless retailers, and plenty of guides to help. One of the most important aspects of bed or mattress shopping is being aware of the different bed sizes and mattress sizes to avoid making a costly mistake. In this article, we outline the standard bed and mattress sizes, their differences, and some key considerations to make before you pull out your credit card.

Bed Size vs. Mattress Size: What’s the Difference?

Bed Size vs. Mattress Size Comparison Chart Homerefinery
Mattresses have very standardized sizes and are made to fit inside bed frames. Bed frames often have considerable variations in overall dimensions—but accommodate standard mattress sizes regardless.

Arguably the most important consideration to make to make when picking out a bed or mattress is to stop and make yourself aware of some basic dimensions. This may seem arbitray—even silly—but will help throughout your entire shopping process. We’ve hammered through plenty of mattress reviews to find the best mattress in each category but all will be for naught if we can’t help ensure you order the right size for your bed! Below are some of the simplest of these ideas with a bit of elaboration to help understand why they’re so important.

Mattresses are Smaller than Bed Frames

In most cases, you’ll find that mattress dimensions are going to be less than bed frame dimensions. This means king size bed dimensions are slightly larger than king size mattress dimensions. This difference in dimensions can be understood by noting mattresses fit inside bedframes. You’ll find this to be the case even with such designs as platform beds and murphy beds.

Box Springs Raise Mattress Height

Many shoppers complain of their mattresses being either too low to the ground or too high from the ground. In most cases, this issue can be resolved through the addition or removal of box springs. Box springs are usually offered as an add-on by mattress retailers but rarely included. Box springs have a very negligible impact on overall mattress comfort so if you’ve already got a set—use those for your new mattress! Just know; a mattress you’ve tried in the store may not have the same height in your home without box springs.

Exact Bed Dimensions May Vary

Bed frames aren’t governed by as rigid of sizing guidelines as mattresses. The overall dimensions of a bed frame may vary wildly between design and manufacturer—even for the same size bed frame. That means that the king bed dimensions from one furniture brand may be entirely different than the king bed dimensions from another. Don’t stress about this—unless otherwise stated each bed frame size has been designed to accommodate that size of mattress, regardless of that bed frames specific dimensions.

Bed Frames Come In Adult And Kids

You aren’t likely to find this written anywhere on a retailer’s website, but bed frame designs aren’t always available as King, Queen, Twin, and Full sizes. In many cases, manufacturers design bedroom collections for either adults or kids—kids furniture is often referred to as a ‘youth collection’ by designers. Before you get your heart set on any bed design make sure it is available in a size that will accommodate the mattress you plan to use it with.

Bed Size & Mattress Size Comparisons

Below you’ll find an outline of different mattress sizes and common bed frame sizes to compare against. Mattress sizes have, more or less, the same width and depth dimensions regardless of brand. Height (thickness) often varies and the addition of box springs can affect this greatly. Bed sizes, depending on the manufacturer and design, will have the width, depth, and height dimensions that vary tremendously. The bed frame sizes listed here are rough estimates based on an average of several different designs. The largest variance in dimensions, for both beds and mattresses, is seen in the height dimension. This is easily understood when one considers that many different beds are many different heights and that many different mattresses are many different thicknesses (heights).

Californian King Mattresses and beds accommodate couples, as well as single-sleepers, that want a little more foot room.

California King Size

The California King bed is an often misunderstood bed size that’s actually slightly narrower than standard king size beds but four inches longer. This bed size first became popular on the West Coast of the United States as a custom-designed size popular among movie stars and the Hollywood Elite. After several decades of marketplace evolution the California King, Queen, and King size mattresses have all become standard options in the bedding industry. Read our article California King vs Regular King: What’s the Difference? for a complete overview of what makes this mattress and bed size unique.

King Size

The King size mattress and bed is was developed in the late 1950’s as an upsell to the then-standard Twin size. This was marketed alongside research suggesting that Americans, as a collective, were growing taller on average. The King size mattress was heralded as a refinement suited for modern families in a modern society. After another decade of support from such groups as the National Association of Bedding Manufacturers, the King size bed was officially mainstream and rapidly-growing in popularity. Today, the king size is regarded as a standard option for both beds and mattresses.

Queen Size beds are popular options for adults with sleeping partners that like close-quarters positioning.

Queen Size

The Queen size mattress also became standardized during the late 1940’s and 1950’s alongside the king mattresses. The Queen size was a considered a hefty upgrade for single sleepers and simpler alternative to putting two twin mattresses side-by-side, a common practice by couples of that era. While many custom mattresses existed at the time, the standardization to Queen and King allowed furniture makers to offer commercial options. For example, placing two twin size mattresses together would offer couples a wider sleeping area but they were unlikely to find a bed frame to cater to that size.

Full Size

The Full-size option is popular for adults, that sleep by themselves most nights when space is a key factor. For example, a full-size mattress is six inches narrower than a queen and six inches shorter. For people of average and below-average heights, this bed size is often an attractive choice. There are fewer beds and mattresses on the market for this size but not so few that one should feel discouraged from looking. This bed is often referred to as a “double bed” and is a popular choice for teenagers and college-aged adults.

Twin Xl Size

The Twin XL is nearly identical to regular twin size beds—the only difference being an extra six inches in overall length. Twin beds are the go-to choice for youth beds, including most bunk beds, but are often abandoned in late teenage years and early adulthood. College dorm rooms utilize the Twin XL for two reasons; the first being their smaller width and the second being a suitable universal length to simplify the procurement process across campus. After all, it’s much easier for colleges to manage to order 20,000 of the exact same product rather than catering to 3-4 different sizes.

Twin Size

The Twin size is the standard youth mattress and is a popular choice for kids around the world. This bed and mattress size is common to trundle beds, bunk beds, and even day beds. These mattresses were popular for adult sleepers in the early parts of the 20th century but, as the average size of Americans started to increase, were replaced by the newly-popularized King and Queen size beds. In today’s world, twin size beds are seen almost exclusively in kids rooms.

Common Questions

When shopping for a new mattress there are several questions that we find often pop up. These may be related to mattress sizes, bed sizes, or box spring sizes. From time to time, we find that our readers run into the same problems. In such cases, we try to build resources to better understand specific issues. This article was one such effort, but we felt charts and explanations of bed and mattress sizes didn’t fully address common concerns. Below, you’ll find several common questions and concerns that often plague the mattress-buying process.

Can I use Twin size box springs for my King Size mattress?

King size mattresses can accommodate non-King size box springs sometimes. The Twin size mattress is exactly one-half the width of the King size mattresses but 6″ shorter. The Twin XL mattress is one-half the width and also the same length which means two Twin XL box springs can be used instead of a King size set of box springs. Just to be clear—two Twin boxsprings do not equal a king size box spring. The width is correct but the length is wrong. One must use the Twin XL size box springs to substitute for a king size box spring.

Can I flip my Mattress Over?

Maybe. Some mattresses are designed to be flipped over. They feature comfortable materials on both the top and bottom, often in varying degrees of firmness. Layla Sleep’s two-sided memory foam mattress is a good example of one such design. You have a layer of memory foam on top designed to provide a medium-firm feel and one layer of memory foam on the bottom designed to provide a firm feel. Most memory foam mattresses have a much denser base layer of foam on the bottom that would not be comparable to the comfort of the top layer. However, this layer would still be somewhat sleepable in our opinion, if you were in a pinch. Other mattresses, such as traditional spring mattresses, aren’t designed to flipped and often contain very uncomfortable materials on the very bottom. Sleeping on the bottom side of a one-sided mattress could damage the top side. Always check with the manufacturer.

About the Measurements

The bed and mattress measurements that were included in this article are to provide an average illustration of dimensional differences between standard sizes. It’s important to recognize the context of these numbers, and that bed sizes vary much more so than mattress sizes. For example, each mattress we compared for this article had the exact same with and length/depth measurements for the available sizes. The height/thickness measurements varied considerably but, as a general rule, mattress sizes are the same regardless of brand. On the other hand, beds and bed frame dimensions can vary wildly between different brands. Much like mattresses, bed frames are usually most different in their height, but overall width and depth/length varies considerably as well. As a general rule, look at the specified size of a bed rather than the actual dimensions to be sure that your mattress will fit. For example, never mind that a certain Queen bedframe measures an overall width of 96″—it’s still only going to accommodate a 60″ wide mattress!

DreamCloud: Hybrid Mattresses for Luxury Sleep

DreamCloud Review Banner Homerefinery

DreamCloud is new to the mattress scene but has arrived in style. Their flagship mattress—an eight layered memory foam micro coil hybrid—offers a quality traditionally reserved for a much higher price range. DreamCloud has set out to repair the relationship between buyers and mattress brands by offering an unbelievable customer service program. DreamCloud offers one of the best hybrid mattresses on the market right now and, while it might not end up being the best mattress for you, it’s definitely worth a closer look.

A New Generation of Mattress

Buying a mattress is no easy task and involves wading through an ocean of sometimes-nauseating advertising. Local mattress stores have taken such a large presence in local communities that conspiracy theories about their true purpose have started to surmount. Truth be told; these stores keep popping up because retail stores have no shame in charging exorbitant markups. Budgets keep growing, products keep shipping, and new stores keep popping up.

DreamCloud is a mattress brand offering quality, luxury, hybrid mattress that will put store brands on their heels

The new generation of mattress retailers is embodied by brands such as DreamCloud that manufacturer their own products and ship directly to their own customers. No middle man, no markups, and no additional mattress stores! This sales model may seem off-putting at first—after all, how are they shipping mattresses? Turns out, the Bed-in-a-box brands such as DreamCloud are quite clever and have revolutionized the way people buy mattresses and the way the entire buying process is handled!

DreamCloud’s Impressive Service Program Offers Such Benefits as Lifetime Warranties & Year-Long In-Home Evaluation Periods

Customer Service Comes First

Buying a mattress is like taking a leap of faith—you do all the research you can, account for all the attributes that are of importance but, ultimately, you have to make a decision to buy or not buy. Reading mattress reviews, comparing different types of mattresses, and even discount shopping are all useful practices when shopping for a mattress. However, no amount of research will offer the certainty of a good night’s sleep. DreamCloud recognizes that each sleeping style is different and individuals don’t always want the same type of comforts. DreamCloud has developed a robust customer satisfaction program to help address these types of disparities while making each step of the process as seamless as possible. Below are some of the most noteworthy features of this program.

365 Night In-Home Trial

Sleeping on a mattress is the only way to be sure you’ve made the right choice. DreamCloud is especially sympathetic to this and has developed a 365 night trial period during which you can return one of their mattresses for a complete refund.

Everlong Warranty

A mattress is no small purchase and knowing a manufacturer will support their products with warranty and replacements should something go wrong is essential. DreamCloud has created an Everlong Warranty which guarantees their products for the rest of the purchaser’s lifetime. Just imagine—never having to buy another mattress!

Free Shipping & Free Returns

Free shipping is a bit of an over-sell since that cost is usually built into the price anyway. Nonetheless, DreamCloud will not surprise you with any delivery fees, handling fees, or shipping charges during checkout. DreamCloud mattresses ship in a vacuum-sealed bag via standard ground carriers like UPS and FedEx.

The DreamCloud Hybrid Coil + Memory Foam Mattress has many Layers to Address the Needs of All Sleepers

Hybrid Mattress Design

DreamCloud’s flagship mattress is their eight-layer hybrid memory foam + microcoil design. This mattress has a plush cashmere blend top, several layers of different types of memory foam, and a weight distributing section of microcoils. At first glance, we thought eight layers were a bit excessive—but ultimately only had good things to say about it. After all—the mattress is extremely comfortable. You’ll find a list of some of our favorite things about the DreamCloud mattress below. For a complete look check out our full DreamCloud mattress review.

15” Thick

Most bed-in-a-box brands offer ~10” thick mattresses which we find to be a bit underwhelming. Admittedly, this is purely preferential, and we appreciate that the extra thickness may be a drawback to some. Nonetheless—we love it! Check out our guide on how to measure your bed frame size to make sure it will accommodate your mattress size!

Double Tufted Top

Some people aren’t fans of the tufted tops on luxury mattresses, but we aren’t among them! Nearly all modern mattresses are marketed as being a luxury mattress, but most fall short. One of the hallmark features of luxury mattresses, in our opinion anyway, is their beautifully-tufted tops. The DreamCloud hybrid comes with an incredibly-double-tufted top comparable to such store brands as Kluft, Stearns, and Foster, of Shifman.

Microcoils are the evolution of traditional inner coil mattress spring designs. Their individually-wrapped design allows them to be much more dynamic and absorbing to shifts in weight. One major advantage of any coil design, traditional or micro coil, is the increased amount of airflow compared to all-foam designs. DreamCloud decided to go for the best of both worlds—the incredible contour support of memory foam combined with the unmatched airflow of microcoils. We support their decision 100 percent!

Overall Impressions

We’ve taken a deep look at more mattress brands and home goods retailers than we can remember. Over the years, we’ve seen plenty of brands arrive on the scene with products they claim to be revolutionary in some shape or form. Truth be told—most revolutions in consumer products markets aren’t really what we’d call a “revolution” at all. Nonetheless, bed-in-a-box mattress brands like DreamCloud have been very disruptive to the traditional sales model of more traditional brands and have brought about serious changes in the pricing of mattresses. In our opinion, DreamCloud is a mattress brand offering quality, luxury, hybrid mattress that will put store brands on their heels. If you’re in the market for a hybrid mattress comparable to luxury models like Kluft or Stearns and Foster, we recommend taking a closer look at DreamCloud.
