History

Magnussen was founded in 1931 by Ingwer Magnussen in the town of Kitchener, Ontario. Magnussen was a cabinet maker by trade and endeavored to start his own brand after facing a shortage of work during the Great Depression. He got started by hand-carving sofa and bedframes for local upholstery businesses.

Magnussen got his start working out of a chicken coop, only moving to a more well-equipt workspace in 1937. By the 1940s, Magnussen had widened his product line to include writing desks, tables, bookcases, and even chairs. It’s recorded that Magnussen worked 16-18 hour days and had shared living quarters in the manufacturing space.

In 1960, Magnussen was officially incorporated as Magnussen Furniture Manufacturing Inc. and continued to pioneer as one of the market leaders. Magnussen’s 20-year-old son, Richard, joined his father in 1970 and, between the two of them, designed every single piece of furniture produced.

In the 1990s, following several decades of continued growth in Canadian markets, Magnussen opened a permanent showroom in High Point, North Carolina—home of the bi-annual High Point Furniture Market. At this point, Magnussen’s US-based presence was under the trade name Magnussen Presidential. In the early 2000s, celebrating a doubling of size, Magnussen Presidential became Magnussen Home.

Today, Magnussen Home does nearly $100 million in annual sales, has offices located in Ontario, High Point, and showrooms in Toronto, Las Vegas, and High Point as well. They endeavor to be a socially responsible furniture brand and continue to innovate while maintaining their humble, made-from-scratch, style.
