Company History

Stephen Gordon founded Restoration Hardware back in 1979 as a boutique-type shop to help finance the restoration of his own historical home. The company initially specialized in, you guessed it: hardware such as doorknobs, cabinet knobs, and basically anything ornate and made of metal. Fast forward to 1998; Restoration Hardware went public with over 50 stores in the United States doing hundreds of millions in revenue.

Since Restoration Hardware’s IPO, the company has since gone private, rebranded itself as RH and has aggressively transitioned its image into an upper-end luxury home goods brand. It also started trading publicly again on the New York Stock Exchange in 2012 under the ticker RH. RH is projected to do more than $2.5 billion USD revenue for the 2019 year, led by their RH New York Gallery bringing in more than $100 million per year.

All the numbers mumbo-jumbo means one thing; RH has seen tremendous success in the marketplace because people love their products. The RH product catalogs serve as the de facto bible in furniture design agencies around the world. RH product developers and designers scour the world in search of the most unique, masterfully-crafted, and timeless designs imaginable. They’ve built their brand on striving to deliver the best and their successes have been well-earned.

The largest criticism that we’ve ever heard cast towards RH was back in 2012 when Time magazine thought their product catalog had too many pages. How helpful.
