Vitamin C Showerhead Benefits
Vitamin C is a water-soluble vitamin used by humans and animals for a host of biological processes within our bodies. It scavenges free radicals, helps repair tissue, and is involved in the synthesis of collagen (R). It’s also heavily involved in the synthesis of protein—which is kind of a big deal. Needless to say, very few are debating the benefits of vitamin c as a nutrient.
Removes/Neutralizes Chlorine
Trace levels of chlorine have been linked to a number of serious health conditions including dementia and respiratory illnesses such as asthma (R)(R). Chlorine, as well as chemical byproducts associated with it such as trihalomethanes and chloramines, are also suspected as being carcinogenic (R). As such, there is a growing concern to the implications of common exposure to these chemicals in water-supplies such as drinking supplies, showering and bathing, and even swimming pools.
Balances pH Levels
As described by the United States Agricultural Department (USDA), one gram of ascorbic acid (vitamin C) can neutralize 1 milligram per liter of chlorine per 100 gallons of water. That’s a bit sciencey—let’s try to simplify. You can also think of it as 2.5 grams of vitamin c being able to neutralize 1 gram of chlorine.
The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that the average municipal water supply contains anywhere from 0.2-1 mg per liter chlorine. The USGS estimates that showers use as much as 5 gallons of water per minute. Estimating the average shower lasting 3 minutes, that’s 15 gallons of water which equates to roughly 56 liters which results in roughly 50 mg chlorine. It would take 125mg of Vitamin C to neutralize that amount of chlorine.
Fun fact: The recommended daily intake of Vitamin C is about 100mg for adults.
Things to Know
Vitamin C comes in several forms. The USDA’s description of the chlorine-neutralizing effects of vitamin c details Ascorbic Acid and Sodium Ascorbate. The main difference between the two is that ascorbic acid will lower the pH of water while sodium ascorbate will not. Both are safe for aquatic life and human contact (so safe both are sold as dietary supplements in fact.)
Final Thoughts
Vitamin C showerheads are a bit off the beaten path when it comes to home decor or bathroom design ideas. For homes where chlorinated water supplies are common, however—these inventions can help cut back on environmental toxins. There’s little debating the potential harm caused by chlorine.
Many municipal regulations dictate enough chlorine be added to water supplies to kill off harmful bacteria but not enough to cause damage to customer health. This meets federal guidelines but—given the opportunity—there seems little downside to playing things safe and neutralizing that bacteria-killing chemical before it hits your body while in the shower! After all, what’s $50 to minimize the risk to your health?
